Dear Dr Schamroth,

I have been listening to your mock oral teleseminars which have been extremely helpful for my preparation to the oral board, scheduled in November 2010. I shall be attending your course at Baltimore in October. My question is whether it is possible for you, based on past experience, to produce a list of high yield topics in OB, GYN as well as in Office management. With this list in hands, I will be more prepared for the oral exam. Thanks.

Yours sincerely,
Hedy

I am assuming that you might well be a GYN oncologist (or fellow). If that is the case, then you are probably not one of those who hates to deal with oncology (and this blog does not apply to you).

If, however you are not a GYN oncologist, then you simply should be comfortable to discuss the cases. If yo have a lot of them, then you are probably already quite familiar with the issues. Keep in mind the most important cancers from the exam point of view are cervical cancer (early stage), ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. That does not mean you can igonre the other tissues, but thes mentioned are clearly more exam relevant.

As far as data presentation is concerned, try to mention on your case list issues that relate to general surgery. eg. 1) add 'DVT prophylaxis' in the treatment column, on any/all laparotomies, 2) add 'concern for wound breakdown' in the complications column for any obese patient undergoing laparotomy, 3) add 'multiple medical comorbidities' in the diagnosis column for patients who are obese, hypertensive, diabetic etc. These kind of entries will expand the discussion in your exam towards general GYN and away from GYN Onc.

If you have any additional questions, or wish to discuss this matter further, please feel free to get in touch with me via the above web site and I will be happy to assist you.

Good luck in your exam.

My gyn case list is almost all gyn onc. Any tips on data presentation, details, and tips for what may be the focus of questions...if onc is not the focus of the exam?
Thanks,
Amy
